BACP Conference – London, 22 September 2012

This event was attended by four hundred therapists and was a great opportunity to hear opinions on a variety of social issues. I took the opportunity to speak briefly about the rising abuse of alcohol and you can read an overview of what I discussed below.

“Driven to Drink – Anxiety Fix or Fad?”
I am aware that many ills have a root in an inability for individuals to cope, leading to anxiety and depression. As a result there has been an upsurge in the use of alcohol intake as a quick fix in order to alleviate anxiety and distress or depression. On the other hand, we are more aware of the way alcohol has been elevated as a must have ingredient in social interaction for the young.

My understanding and personal experience as an outsider looking in at this phenomenon has enabled me to observe the devastating effects of alcohol consumption on the lives of those afflicted as well as their family members, whilst one looks on helplessly. This has motivated me to be of service in offering support and advice. I therefore feel able to not only help individuals reduce or curb drinking levels through hypnotherapy, but also help those whose family life has been turned upside down by offering tolerance and understanding through counselling and hypnotherapy.

I am aware that there is no quick fix for this problem – most of my clients come to me with anxiety, stress and depression related problems. We have to look at why people turn to alcohol to alleviate the pain of living in this stressful day to day world. It seems to be an aid to stress and anxiety of the daily pressures now, and also a fashion that spreads like wildfire, the way things spread on facebook.”
