WEF 2017 Delhi Conference

cornelius_counselling_wef2017_award_mary_white

I returned to Delhi for my second visit on 8th May 2017 to attend the Women Economic Forum 2017 conference at the Pullman Novotel Hotel in New Delhi. This year focused on “Creating, innovating, understanding and driving the future”.

In my capacity as a Member of the Advisory Executive Council for Health and Wellbeing I was able to contribute at three levels over the course of the week. I took part in a plenary that brought together the members of the Health and Wellbeing Committee, and a discussion regarding our contributions towards innovating for health and wellness. ** I was particularly honoured to receive from Dr Harbeen Arora an award for “Iconic Women Creating a Better World for All” at the Plenary.

I was also lead speaker at a workshop session “Stress, anxiety and fear : breaking free through hypnotherapy” and sharing the stage with Subashis Baneri, a businessman in India.

During the conference I was very pleased to attend a workshop seminar given by Dr Sane from Mumbai, who gave an impassioned discourse on stem-cell research and the success achieved from this type of work. Dr. Sane is herself diagnosed with Motor Neurons.

On the final day of the conference, I was delighted to be invited by Minal Potnis, renowned Face Yoga Practitioner, to a medical conference where medical practitioners presented their work in the area of anti-aging stem-cell solutions. This was a unique opportunity to witness some very innovative practices and developments across the globe and brought practitioners together to share their discoveries.

I am still involved in this network of medical practitioners and await a further stem cell conference to be held in London from 3-5th September 2017 when I will be able to meet and discuss with a key presenter from India, Dr Prabhu Mishra (second from left in photo above), my work in the field of anxiety and depression and how this can help patients who are suffering from debilitating diseases.

  cornelius_counselling_wef2017_mary_white_13

At the end of the conference I travelled with Dr. Satya Shah (on left in above photo), from University of Greenwich, to Ahmedabad at the invitation of Dr. Harbeen Arora, WEF Global Chairlady and Chancellor of Rai university, in my capacity as senior lecturer at the University. This was a very enlightening journey which took me to Ghandi’s Museum on the outskirts of the city fashioned much like an Egyptian pyramid. The experience of the re-enactment of Ghandi’s life was very moving and a beautiful memory of the trip.

Academy of Integrated Health and Medicine

I was fortunate, during the conference, to meet Monireh Ayoubzadeh, an empowerment and wellness coach from San Diego, California, US. I have, as a result, become a member of the Academy of Integrated Health and Medicine in US, which brings together a wealth of practitioners in both medicine and ayurvedic as well as holistic alternative approaches.

I will be attending the AIHM conference on 22-26th October 2017 and look forward to yet another fascinating journey and the opportunity to mix and mingle with 1100 delegates and speakers. It will be a unique opportunity to share the work that I am doing with anxiety, stress and addiction and I also look forward to being able to share my experiences with you as well as the innovative ideas and practices that I will be able to bring to my own practice.

Breaking Free from Anxiety and Fear

This year’s Health & Wellbeing Live event at Mabledon in Tunbridge Wells will see Mary sharing her knowledge as one of the event’s Expert Speakers on Saturday 23rd September at 14:30-15:00pm.

With a plethora of qualifications and experience in counselling and psychotherapy, Mary shares techniques to relieve anxiety and fears and talks about stepping back from the world to regenerate spiritually. Anxiety and fear can be crippling, but it doesn’t need to rule your life.

The following is a pre-event Q&A session with Mary and explores who, how and why she has become a highly regarded and much respected professional in the world of Counselling and Hypnotherapy not only in the UK but also internationally.

If you would like to attend the event and listen to Mary’s talk at 2-30pm book your tickets here.

Q1You cover many different types of therapies – what are the benefits of hypnotherapy compared to psychotherapy or meditation?

Hypnotherapy is similar to the meditative state in as much as one is transported into the hypnogogic state of semi consciousness which is hovering between wakefulness and sleep. This is a medium to treat many issues that trouble individuals and spoil their daily lives, mainly through anxiety, stress and fear that can manifest in many other disorders, from weight problems and phobias that may deteriorate into depression and addiction. Realising that these feelings are communicated via negative thought processes that dominate in the psyche, there is a need to have understanding through talking about them (counselling) then it is possible with the aid of the hypnogogic state to change those negative thoughts and feelings into positive behaviours. It has an immediate effect for those who desire the change and I use hypnotherapy also to help individuals find the peace, tranquillity and contentment that enables them to be more able to cope with the issues of daily life in a more relaxed way so that the anxieties are deflated. Psychotherapy is the area of analysis that enables me to decipher and bring to awareness any issues that are evident in the past or present that need to be treated in order for the transformation to occur. I encourage my clients to develop the art of meditation to practice at home as the benefits are manifold for maintaining peace and remaining grounded and this gives individuals the capacity to keep that calm demeanour through all kinds of challenges.

Q2 – How do you know which therapy is right for you? Does it depend on the person or the trauma or something else?

Individuals come to see me with a kaleidoscope of issues that are troubling them and I am able to decide, through discussion and analysis, which therapy treatment is correct dependent on the presenting issue. Once a particular issue is identified and overcome through the hypnotherapy treatment, then I use the hypnotherapy as a meditative and supportive tool to continue the work until the client feels sufficiently able to cope alone. I do have regular clients who continue to come to see me after we have resolved issues, such as addiction from drugs and alcohol, or acute anxiety that is present in their everyday lives, so that we can work together on the path of recovery of the energy fields, establishing and maintaining the equilibrium of inner peace.

Q3 – How did you become a therapist/what made you become a therapist?

My “raison d’etre” was a strong desire many years ago to develop my passion for psychology and to help individuals to enjoy a better way of life through becoming more aware of the channel and connection of mind and spirit that has an impact on bodily dis-ease, in order to give individuals a better quality of life. Hypnotherapy was not necessarily my aim when I set out on this path, but as a result of my research, I realised that this was such a powerfully beneficial medium to help open the channels for spiritual and mental transformation for inner contentment. Having lost my partner many years ago to addiction, I felt I had to try and help others who suffered with emotional difficulties and I am hugely gratified that I am able to do so. As a lecturer at university, delivering the psychology of consumer behaviour, this was a catalyst for change that ignited my interest and decision to research psychology, psychotherapy and counselling.

The hypnogogic state is a platform for developing inner peace and connection to the soul, our centre of wisdom that guides and directs us for a fulfilling life in the external environment. It is a meditative state that is easily learned by individuals through regular practise, to be able to find inner contentment. Constant exposure to the challenges of the external environment is like working 24/7 without a rest. It is important to take time out to recharge our inner energy fields (chakras) to create balance and re-energise and refresh our approach to daily living. To maintain a peaceful and tranquil approach to life means taking time out for nourishing the soul and spirit in simple ways such as a walk in the woods, by the sea or any water, which has an emotionally relaxing effect, or spending some quality time connecting with our inner wisdom, through meditation and yoga practice.

Q4 – Your talk at Health and Wellbeing Live is about relieving anxiety and fears through spiritual regeneration – tell us a bit more about the thought / science behind this.

The most exciting and uplifting experience you will every have is to find your “self”. Taking this path will transform your understanding of life purpose and help you to embrace the divine path of learning on a journey of discovery from darkness into the light.

Many individuals fear their thoughts – the future, loneliness, difficult relationships, loss of loved ones and this can spiral into depression and in some cases sink further into addiction, and other means of “shutting out” overwhelming anxieties. I refer to it as “the eclipse of the soul” where the dark thoughts start to shadow the light i.e. losing the connection and no longer attuned to inner wisdom; negative thought feeds the black shadow which eclipses and slides into disease and illness. It is about regaining or finding anew one’s inner self – the heart is the soul’s messenger, so we must listen to our hearts. Illness, in fact, is an opportunity for self-reflection and provides a signal to take time out to contemplate troubling issues and find a way to resolve them. Hypnotherapy helps with the connection to self – going inwards and leaving the outside, external world behind for a brief period of total clarity of thought, to connect with one’s inner world for healing to take place. It is a beautiful and uplifting experience.

WEF 2017 London Conference and Beyond with Mary White

The latest WEF London conference was held from 31st January to 2nd February 2017 at the Bhavan Centre, Castletown Road, London W14 9HE. It was a very enlivened and interesting few days of fusion with women from around the world all gathered to support the theme for the conference this year “Awakening the Power Within : The Way Forward for UK”.

I was privileged to be able to partake and contribute on 1st February by leading a session titled “Mastering your Fear” and it was a very empowering session where I was asked to lead the group in meditation. Most of the delegates were keen to understand the principles of hypnotherapy in assisting sufferers to change their outlook through the hypnogogic state to a more meaningful and positive outlook which enables individuals to go forward with increased confidence and renewed enthusiasm.

Goodwill to all…

For those of you who already experience stress in daily life, lurching from one week to the next in a frenzy of duties at work and at home, spiralling towards the prospect of Christmas can for some be a further addition to an already stressful existence.

When you can't see the wood for the Christmas trees

When you can’t see the wood for the Christmas trees

The extra work to make a memorable occasion for family and friends can sometimes dampen the peace and joy that we expect to feel on that magic day. Past memories play a part at this time as to attitudes towards what should be a time of warmth and love expressed to all, remembering those less fortunate and a time for giving.

“Christmastide: Goodwill to all men!”  An expression of positive anticipation we can all identify with.  Behind the surface merriment, as a new year dawns, is a natural time for self-reflection – looking back over the year and seeing what changes need to be made to nurture inner happiness and wellbeing for positive forward growth.

If it gets to the point of not being able to see the wood for Christmas trees please get in touch.

Meditation. Namibian style.

cornelius_counselling_meditation_sossusvlei
I have an affinity with and desire to go to the desert periodically to soak up the space, expanse and experience being and introspection. This is akin to yearnings for the sea and its mesmerising effect for meditation. The silence of the vastness and stillness in the desert, which lives, yet time stops in space as one connects with the inner self, realising in the solitude, how we are all connected in the  breadth of the universe.
Reflections of how this living desert diminishes the importance of material needs in the northern hemisphere and one’s spirit blends with its limitless boundary to find total peace and tranquillity washing over.
An opportunity to connect with the powerful energies in the desert by meditating that can be a fulfilling revelation of the peace that surpasses and travels beyond this dominion. Sossusvlei spans more than 55 kms and meets the Skeleton Coast in the west. The poignancy of the light and shade highlight the continuous evolution of darkness of the night into glorious light of the day – a true “yin and yang” experience!

cornelius_counselling_meditation_dsc00913_crop
The Sossus Dune Lodge nestles in the expanse of nowhere with a soft backdrop of pink shaded mountains in the distance – a truly meditative place near the Sesriem Canyon (six ropes). The Deadvlei area is reached by jeep and a long walk ahead, to a breathtaking panorama that awaits the eye. Black tree trunk remains rise out of the caked mud – these are hundreds of years old to be witnessed and admired still, against the backdrop of the red iron sand that comes from the Orange River in the East and gives the river its name.

cornelius_counselling_meditation_dsc00936_crop
The journey to Etosha Pan Game Park was long and took most of the day, but well worth the wait to witness the wealth of game easily found at the various natural and manmade waterholes across the 200km breadth of the pan. Winter is high season as the Pan is dry and therefore more opportunity to relish the beauty of the bush. A different, but equally nourishing experience that humbles; an opportunity to observe the behaviours of the various species together and study their sensitivities: how the graceful giraffe hesitates at the water’s edge before drinking, showing her vulnerability.

cornelius_counselling_meditation_dsc01151_crop
The rhino family journey to join the herd of elephants – the reliance on the males to lead the family safely to the water’s edge. Herds of wildebeest mix with the trusting, spritely springboks and gemsboks. The Pan itself is white, flat caked mud and eclipses into the distance, no end in sight.

The limestone dust works its magic as it rises above passing jeeps and settled on the vegetation like snow in mid winter. A passing elephant receives the white dust coat, blending further into the environment.

cornelius_counselling_meditation_dsc01170_crop
Sunrise and sunset: the dawning of the new day experienced from the top of a dune, or spied through the greyness of the trees is a magical dawning. As the bush rests we see the setting, westerly sun sink slowly behind a dune to reveal the glory of the star-filled, velvet sky.

cornelius_counselling_meditation_dsc00968_crop
An experience not to be missed – “let me come again to wonder at the beauty of Africa and connect with mother nature, reach out to our universal consciousness and listen to the silence”.

A spirituality trip to Coonoor, South India

The journey to Coonoor was not without its problems, but once I arrived, after five hour delay at Chennai airport, in Coimbatore, there was a beautiful drive up into the lush Nilgiri mountains where the slopes are covered with tea estates.

High up in the mountains, where the air was fresh and clean, we assembled in a pergoda in the Sim Gardens which was a perfect, tranquil setting for meditation and I enjoyed the opportunity to fine tune meditation skills under the tutelage of Dr Newton.

The day of the workshop was attended by about thirty delegates and was a fascinating approach to developing and maintaining positivity in our kaleidoscope of life relationships.

Days were spent soaking up the peace and tranquillity of this place while planning and exchanging views on the spiritual journey and life’s meaning.

The peace and tranquillity of the Nigiri Mountains, Coonoor, India

As we know, everything in our lives has a reason and this journey further clarified for me, direction, meaning and purpose for my work.  To sum up, the vision was clearly evident in our discussions, as follows :

“The purpose, on this spiritual path, is to impart knowledge of spirituality as opposed to man-made religions and rituals. These are, however, a very important part of our spirituality.  Each one has a soul encased in the body that is its temple, and is of prime importance.

It is about the discovery of meta physical phenomena and the eternity of the Soul, setting one free from external influences, developing contentment and enlightenment through a dedicated journey of growth and spiritual understanding; making our lives more meaningful: Imparting guidance on the path of life and the light that leads the way.  Therefore, offering practical knowledge and coping skills to implement it in daily lives; this can only happen if we try and apply the laws of the universe to ourselves.”
